Smart gelding who bagged Sprint Stakes at Sandown in July. Proved a let-down in Curragh Group 2 next time but acquitted himself well on his first try at the top level when fifth of 17 in in Nunthorpe Stakes at York (5f, good to firm) 29 days ago, running on. Merits respect back in calmer waters.

Made winning debut for current connections in 5f Listed event in Meydan and ran creditably in a strong Musselburgh handicap on return to the UK. Poorly placed in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and bounced back to form returned to this trip to 14-runner handicap there in July. Player back up in class.

Shaped well when ½-length second of 7 in Group 3 Abernant at Newmarket (6f) on UK/stable debut but below that level all 3 starts since, beating only one home in 5f listed event at York latest. Has work to do.

Smart at his best, landing the Temple Stakes at Haydock in 2024. Yet to score this term in the face of some stiffish tasks but his latest effort behind Shagraan in a listed race at Beverley was a bit underwhelming.

Took his form to new heights last year, making the breakthrough at Group 1 level in Sprint Cup at Haydock before not seen to best effect when fifth of 20 in Champions Sprint at Ascot. Drops to 5f for the first time in his career after an absence but has the form to be a big factor.

Career best when making a breakthrough at pattern level in the Group 3 Hackwood here (6f, good) in July. Unsuited by the step up to 7f in Hungerford Stakes and quickly back on her game when fourth of 17 in Sprint Cup at Haydock, albeit well positioned. Contender back down in grade.

Built on several good efforts this season when winning 9-runner listed race (15/2) at Beverley (5f, good) 21 days ago by 2¼ lengths, readily. Respected back up in grade.

Value for a bit extra over the result when winning 5f listed event at Haydock in May. Far from discredited on her first try at the top level when ninth of 20 in King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot (5f) and run best excused in in Prix de Meautry at Deauville last time, not ideally placed.

Progressive on AW and carried that good work over to the turf with a 5f York handicap success at the end of May. Limitations seemingly exposed in Beverley listed race last time, though, and this is even tougher.

Bated Breath filly who gained breakthrough in listed company at Cork (5.5f) in May before an excellent second in Group 2 Sandy Lane at Haydock later that month. Similar form in defeat in listed/Group company since, though shaped as if 5f is barely enough of a test at Beverley on most recent outing.

Right back on song following a 7-week break when recording a fourth success from 6 starts in 8-runner handicap at Goodwood (5f, good to firm) 28 days ago, staying on to lead final 100 yds. This asks for more but dangerous to rule out further improvement given her overall profile.

Forecasts

Shagraan (11/4), Rumstar (5/1), Montassib (11/2), Rage Of Bamby (13/2), Cover Up (8/1), Kerdos (10/1), First Instinct (11/1), Balmoral Lady (12/1), Grand Grey (16/1), Queen All Star (22/1), Habooba (50/1)

13:30 Newbury - 20 September 2025 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

MONTASSIB drops to 5f for the first time in his career on his belated comeback, which is an obvious question mark, but he has a good record fresh and will surely go well on these terms providing conditions remain on the softer side of good. Shagraan produced a career best to land a Beverley listed race in good style 3 weeks ago and is respected back up in grade, with Rumstar also feared under a penalty having acquitted himself on his first try at the highest level in the Nunthorpe.
