Useful winner for Roger Varian who ran best race for present stable when fourth at Epsom (7f) last month. Not in same form despite filling same spot in 6-runner handicap back at that venue 31 days ago but certainly too soon to be writing him off now switched back to all weather.

Winner of 6f York novice on second of his 2 starts as a juvenile and positive start to this season, going close on return at Doncaster prior to again finding just one too good on Newmarket handicap debut. Shade below par at Leicester last time, but step back up to 7f should help back from a break.

Perfect start to the campaign when landing a C&D handicap in April and not seen to best effect all 3 starts since, needing stronger gallop when close-up last of 4 in handicap at Yarmouth (1m) 51 days ago. Boasts a 100% record on artificial surfaces and he remains with potential.

2 wins from 5 runs this year. Career best when winning 10-runner handicap (7/2) at Newmarket (7f, good) 15 days ago, leading dying strides having settled a bit better than has been the case. Respected making tapeta debut.

Enhanced his excellent record here when bagging a third C&D victory in February. Excuses back here next time and whilst he produced a lesser display back on turf when tenth of 12 in handicap at Thirsk (7f, good to firm, 20/1) in May, he's the type to bounce back returned to this venue.

6f novice winner at 2 yrs who is shaping up well in handicaps, bouncing back to best despite not finding the race panning out ideally when second of 10 in handicap at Catterick (7f, good) 32 days ago. Even longer trips promise to suit but he's of definite interest nevertheless.

Successful from a 1 lb higher mark at Windsor (1m) early last season but lightly raced and not at that level since, returning from 15 months off when eighteenth of 19 in handicap at York (7.9f, good to firm) 22 days ago, weakening from 2f out. This should reveal more.

Little show for William Haggas last season but has proved a different proposition since returning for her new yard, scoring on the AW in February prior to a promising handicap debut following another break at Doncaster (7f, good to firm). Excuses at Ascot last time so can get back on track.

Consistent, fair 7f winner as a juvenile who proved very easy to back and may well have needed first start for 9 months when tenth of 13 in handicap at this course (8.1f) 35 days ago. Appeals as the type to do better as a 3-y-o but this looks another warm race.

Came back to her best when successful for first time since her debut in 9-runner handicap at Carlisle (7.8f) in June. May have found the step up to 9f stretching her back there next time but more required back in this higher grade in any case on all-weather debut.

Forecasts

Fondo Blanco (6/4), Philanthropist (9/4), Native Instinct (9/2), Rogue Diplomat (6/1), Federal Envoy (20/1), Angel Of Rain (25/1), Lovely Spirit (33/1), Catton Lady (40/1), Brave Empire (50/1), Perseverants (100/1)

16:22 Southwell - 17 August 2025 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

Having posted a career-best display when making a winning return in a C&D handicap in April, PHILANTHROPIST hasn't been seen to best effect on turf since. He remains with potential now taking on his elders for the first time and gets the narrow vote in the hope he gets a good gallop to aim at. Native Instinct, Fondo Blanco and Rogue Diplomat are others to consider in a race the 3-y-os are fancied to dominate.
