4/5
Maiden hurdler who didn't entirely convince initially over fences but got his act together, not least in the jumping department, when scoring over this C&D (good) in good style last week. Obvious claims under a penalty.

12/1
Low-mileage 6-y-o who was narrowly denied in a 2m Plumpton handicap hurdle in December. Has failed to build on that since (underwent a wind op following latest start) but would have a chance if able to get back on track now switched to fences in first-time cheekpieces.

Winner of fifth start between the flags and posted arguably his best effort under Rules to date when fourth in a 15-runner handicap hurdle at Hexham last spring. However, little impact both subsequent starts and improvement needed now sent chasing.

Produced a couple of decent efforts around this time last year but very little to shout about in 3 starts since returning from a break/wind op in September. Chase debut.

8/1
Hurdles winner in Ireland and perfect start over fences when scoring at Sedgefield (19.3f, heavy) in February. Jumping wasn't so slick when beaten favourite upped to 21f at the same course next time but an even bigger concern here is the drying ground.

Switch to handicap company/addition of a tongue tie did the trick at Hereford where he opened his hurdles account in January. However, has followed that with a series of lesser efforts and will need to raise his game now tackling fences.

9/2
Remains a maiden following 10 starts overall but has finished second or third on 8 occasions, including on each of his 3 starts at up to 21f in this sphere. This step back up in trip looks a good move (tapped for toe when third over 2m at Hereford when last seen in January) and he's a key player.

25/1
Point winner who has found just one too good on 4 of his 7 starts over fences. Still, finding at least one too good does appear to be something of a habit for him (0-10 under Rules) and he again looks vulnerable for win purposes.

Took advantage of a career-low mark to end a long losing run in handicap chase at Market Rasen in November. Followed up off 8 lb higher there next time but the wheels came off up a further 8 lb back from a break at Hereford last month, albeit he did look rusty that day.

Forecasts

Happy Du Mesnil (4/5), Benny Silver (9/2), Big Bee Hive (8/1), Nimbus Boy (10/1), Tellmesomethingood (12/1), Hattons Gardens (18/1), Honneur De Sivola (25/1), Champagne Town (50/1), Caro Des Flos (66/1)

14:30 Southwell - 14 May 2024 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

The obvious starting point is HAPPY DU MESNIL, who jumped with greater accuracy than in his three previous chase starts when scoring over C&D last week. He is taken to follow up under a penalty, most likely at thge chief expense of Benny Silver. It'll be interesting to see how Tellmesomethingood shapes up in the betting ahead of this chase debut, while Big Bee Hive has decent enough form claims but the drying ground is a worry where he is concerned.
