Would be thrown in off this mark if anywhere near his best but he has struggled since finishing a decent third at Carlisle (20f, soft) in November.

40/1
C&D winner who probably needed the run on first outing since leaving Rebecca Menzies after 13 months off when finishing well held on the Flat at Newcastle (12.4f) in November, capitulating quickly once headed. Back over hurdles with plenty to prove.

Yet to get his head in front and offered little on first outing since leaving John McConnell after 6 months off at Hexham (16.2f, heavy) a couple of months ago. Makes very little appeal despite a tumbling mark.

Easily best effort when second on handicap debut fitted with a hood at Musselburgh in February. Did too much too soon trying to dominate a stronger field back there (17.4f, heavy) 5 weeks ago and is worth another chance.

Attracted plenty of support and shaped well when runner-up over C&D on first start for this yard in November. Far too keen for his own good there next time, but more like it when fourth at Newcastle 16.9f, soft) in December. Respected returning from a 5-month break.

Long-standing maiden who failed to justify support returned to hurdling/a longer trip (cheekpieces left off) on first outing since leaving Miss Elizabeth Doyle at Hexham (20.1f, heavy) 7 weeks ago, finishing very tired. Back down in trip and a sounder surface could prove beneficial.

Best effort over hurdles came when third in mares maiden at Doncaster (16.6f, good to soft) last March. Hasn't gone on from that since, finishing tailed off at this track and Kelso in recent weeks. Dropped another 3 lb but easy to look elsewhere.

Promise when placed on all 3 starts in bumpers but has been decidedly underwhelming in 3 maiden hurdles, including over C&D 3 months ago. Starts out in handicaps from a basement mark as a result and may well prove a different proposition.

French claiming winner who justified good support from a career-low mark at Newcastle (16.8f) 12 months ago. Ran no sort of race after 8 months off at Kelso (16.2f, heavy) in January (found to have bled) so would take a leap of faith to get involved after another absence.

Lightly raced 5-y-o who produced his best effort to date after 12 weeks off when second of 10 in handicap at this course (19.8f, heavy) a couple of months ago. Back down in trip and warrants respect if able to build on that.

Poor maiden handicap hurdler who showed the benefit of his recent stable debut when fifth of 14 at Newcastle (20.3f, heavy) last month. Another step forward needed if he's to bag that elusive first success.

C&D winner in 2021 but has been more miss than hit on the Flat over winter. 4 lb out of the weights and he looks an easy swerve.

Forecasts

Heart Above (5/2), For Three (9/2), Huit Reflets (7/1), Boyneside (7/1), La Quarite (15/2), Robin Goodfellow (8/1), The King Of May (12/1), Penpal (18/1), Lady Hamilton (18/1), Strong Team (33/1), Major Snugfit (40/1), Ask Bob (66/1)

19:30 Sedgefield - 10 May 2024 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

Cases can be made for many, but it could pay to take a chance on HEART ABOVE, who has shown precious little in maiden hurdles but it's worth remembering he was fair in bumpers and starts out in handicaps from a basement mark. Boyneside produced his best effort to date at this track a couple of months ago, so he's put forward as the main danger back down in trip, ahead of Huit Reflets and La Quarite.
