33/1
Useful handicapper who scaled new heights when landing the Rendlesham at Haydock last season. However, more miss than hit since, including when attempting to defend his crown in that Grade 2 contest in February. Others make more appeal.

Useful novice hurdler during 2021/22 campaign (fourth in Aintree Grade 1 final start) and impressive start to his chase career at Hexham (3m, heavy) last November. Clearly wasn't right when pulled up in a match the following month but subsequent absence is an obvious concern.

Made light of a 2-year absence when landing a 2m Ascot conditions race in November. Strong efforts in defeat next 2 starts, notably when fourth of 21 in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury, and below par display at the Cheltenham Festival last month can be excused. High on the shortlist.

Found improvement on debut for Olly Murphy when winning 6-runner handicap hurdle at Wetherby in December. Followed that with a couple of good efforts in defeat at the same course prior to departing before the race began in earnest at Ascot last time. Not without each-way hope.

14/1
Likeable type who won 5 times at up to 2½m in novice company last term, culminating in a decisive success at this meeting. No show in handful of appearances so far this season but his mark is starting to ease and he would be a real threat if the addition of cheekpieces were to work the oracle.

22/1
Dual point winner who looked potentially useful when making a successful hurdling debut at Perth last summer. Highly tried since (contested graded races on last 4 starts) but will need to improve if he's to make a winning handicap bow off what looks a stiff mark.

Well backed before getting off the mark for current connections in a 7-runner handicap hurdle at Haydock in December. Well held both subsequent starts, though, and Harry Skelton prefers Theformismighty.

12/1
Winner of 2 of his 4 starts as a novice last season and added to his tally when taking a handicap upped to 2½m at Hexham in October. Poor next 2 starts but more like it the last twice, latterly finding just one too good at Kelso, and he's worth a second look.

Winner of a novice event here and a Naas handicap last season. Reappearance third off a 3 lb higher mark at Haydock was pretty solid but latest effort needs forgiving. Cheekpieces applied.

100/1
Progressive novice during 2021/22 campaign, the highlight of which was her success in a listed event at Doncaster. May still have her best days ahead of her but it's a big ask for her to make a winning handicap debut in a competitive race such as this on the back of a 2-year absence.

Age: 8|  Weight: 11-2| J: Ryan Mania| T: A M Thomson| OR:  123| CD
14/1
Winner of this race in 2021 and the following year. Mixed bag since switched to fences but wasn't entirely disgraced back hurdling at Kelso (16.2f, soft) last month and, eased 4 lb since, he's slipped to a dangerous mark.

Signed off last term with success at Bangor and, following a low-key start to this season, he took a step back in the right direction when runner-up at Wetherby (19.7f, heavy) in January. Didn't do much wrong following a wind op when fourth of 9 at Kelso last time and he's not ruled out.

Expensive point winner who built on previous promise in a first-time tongue strap (also had breathing operation) when easily winning 6-runner maiden at Market Rasen (20.6f, soft) last month. Very much of interest for top yard now pitched into a handicap off what looks a fair mark.

9/2
Good-looking sort who got off the mark in a 5-runner novice at Carlisle (19.3f, heavy) in February. Shaped well back in handicap company when fourth at Uttoxeter where he did well to still be on the premises until late on having taken such a keen hold. Now tried in a hood and he's a big player.

15:20 Ayr - 19 April 2024 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

In the hope that the addition of a hood helps him to settle, JAGWAR is the suggestion. The unexposed 5-y-o did well all things considered when fourth at Uttoxeter last month and he is probably capable of better than his current mark implies. Given that his yard was under a cloud at the time of the Cheltenham Festival, Doddiethegreat's effort in the Coral Cup can be forgiven and, that aside, he possesses a very appealing profile. Hugos New Horse and Theformismighty are others to consider.
