Useful chaser at his best but ended his time with Venetia Williams out of form. Becoming well treated and might have needed the run on yard debut when 18 lengths fifth of 7 to The Big Bite in Greatwood Gold Cup at this C&D (good to firm) 3 weeks ago, but others more solid.

High-class chaser in his pomp who capitalised on sliding mark in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree (2½m, good to soft) on return. However, his record in recent years is very patchy and he completely mis-fired over the same C&D next time. Lit up by headgear at Ascot since and back down in trip now.

Formerly a smart novice hurdler/chaser. Hard to train over the years and not at that level nowadays but still retains all his enthusiasm and resolution judged on his gutsy win at Warwick 6 weeks ago, edging out a fellow veteran. Vulnerable to progressive sorts here, though.

Enhanced good strike rate over fences with facile victory at Doncaster (19f, heavy) a year ago. Well held first 2 starts this season but back to form on the back of a breathing operation when third at Warwick last month. Can make presence felt if coming on again (eased 2 lb).

Well served by return to chasing when doubling his tally in this sphere at Ffos Las (19.4f) in November. Found Class 1 handicap too much at Cheltenham on New Year's Day but much more like it when close second at Sandown 2 weeks ago (likely would have won if jumped better). Not taken lightly.

Dual bumper winner who was successful twice from 5 starts over hurdles last season and getting the hang of things over fences now, producing a career best when scoring at Haydock last month, jumping well and forging clear. High on shortlist.

Built up a good strike rate over hurdles last season, gaining fourth victory in a Wincanton novice, and coming good over fences now after a slow start, off the mark in this sphere at Hereford 8 weeks ago. This harder but may do better still.

Improved over fences last season, winning twice at Lingfield. Bettered low-key reappearance effort (reportedly bled) with respectable efforts at Kempton/Sandown before resuming winning ways at latter track 2 weeks ago, jumping well out in front. Will find this harder to dominate.

Ex-French bumper winner who has improved with each of his 4 runs over fences, landing 20f Newcastle handicap on Boxing Day before following up in good style at Ffos Las. Open to further improvement and leading contender.

Most of these arrive in good form but the lightly-raced HELTENHAM is potentially the big improver in the field given the manner of his wins at Newcastle and Ffos Las, so he could still be ahead of his mark. Fellow 6-y-o Super Six is getting his act together over fences now and rates the main threat after his dominant win at Haydock, while The Big Bite responded well to this headgear when winning the Greatwood with a bit in hand over C&D so must be respected, too.
