The Lamplighterp,t32
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-13| J: George Rooke(5)| T: George Baker| OR:  73| D
11/2
Has a poor strike rate (1-21) on turf, where he scored decisively in a 0-70 at Goodwood (6f, good) last August. Went close at Brighton from today's mark two runs later. A little inconsistent, but should be very competitive back at this level again.

Triple winner at 5f-6f, including a comfortable success at Bath (5½f, good; first-time visor) in a 0-65 last time out. That was his best effort for well over a year, and whether he can reproduce it from 7lb higher and in a better race is doubtful.

Triple 6f winner on good/good to firm going, Arrives in the form of his life after scoring narrowly at Newbury last month, and then improving on that at Yarmouth last time. 1lb drop and drop in grade won't hurt. Considered.

Scored at Redcar last season (6f, good) in novices' company and earned a first handicap success on her reappearance at Windsor (6f, good) last month. Held from this mark at Salisbury last time, giving her a bit to prove now.

Narrowly beat The Lamplighter at Bath last September and has a better strike rate (3-27) than that opponent. Is on the same mark as that latest success again today. Consistency not a strong suit, but if fully firing he would have claims.

Got off the mark on his eighth and final start for Ed Walker when, in first-time blinkers, he landed a Kempton handicap (6f, AW) last October, when 3lb lower. Went very close from today's mark back there last time but has a bit to prove on turf.

Didn't show much on her first two outings, but made significant improvement on that when a 2L third in a Wolverhampton fillies' novice event (6f, AW) last month. Needs to improve again to defy this initial mark on her turf debut.

Consistent gelding who remains a maiden, though has been placed over 5f-7f in four of his seven starts. Beaten favourite back in novice company at Windsor last time and drops 3lb for this return to a handicap. Not ruled out.

Improved on each of her first three starts (all 6f, AW) at Lingfield during the winter, but hasn't been as good in a couple of more recent fillies' handicaps. Same mark here as when held at Kempton last time, so more needed.

Improved on his juvenile form when beaten 1L in a Lingfield novice event (5f, AW; first-time hood) last month, before scoring at Windsor (5f, good) next time when 5lb lower than here. Held in this grade last time, but not written off up in trip.

20/1
1-14, having won a 0-65 on the AW at Chelmsford (6f) last August, when 3lb lower. Yet to match his AW form on turf, so arrives with a bit to prove in that respect. Couldn't write him off if transferring AW abilities to this surface.

Forecasts

Grey Galleon (3/1), The Lamplighter (11/2), Ahorsecalledwanda (7/1), Fashionesque (7/1), Global Hope (8/1), Turn To Rock (9/1), Giovanni Tiepolo (12/1), Dark Kris (12/1), Spanish Star (14/1), Champagne Supanova (20/1), Front of Line (25/1)

12:35 Newmarket - 24 July 2020 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

Last-time winner Grey Galleon looks a good starting point, but his record suggests that he will struggle to defy a 7lb rise, especially in this better contest, and preference is for GLOBAL HOPE, who can take advantage of a 1lb drop and a coincidental drop in grade. Spanish Star will be a big danger if putting his best hoof forward, while Dark Kris is being cut a little slack by the handicapper, and those possible contenders are far from an exhaustive list.
  1. Global Hope
  2. Spanish Star
  3. Dark Kris
