Age: 6|  Weight: 9-7| J: J P Sullivan| T: Mrs R Carr| OR:  85| CD
7/1
Won his last two starts over C&D and has added two further wins since then on other AW surfaces off higher marks. Produced a career-best last time over this trip at Wolverhampton (helped by a strongly-run race); up 3lb still enters calculations.

11/4
C&D winner who comes here off the back of a below-par run on Polytrack having produced a sound 7f Fibresand performance the time before. Has won off marks in the 80's in the past but this rating may just be beyond him now.

No stranger to winning on Fibresand with five course wins to his name, three coming at this trip. Struggled for the most part since his win off a 2lb higher mark over C&D in February; ran poorly after a break last time, still without usual headgear.

Yet to run on Fibresand he's by a sire with a modest record on this surface. Faces a fair few with better records at this track having run poorly on Tapeta last time (well beaten behind Katheefa); others are more persuasive in this instance.

8/1
Three-time winner on turf in Ireland last year over sprint trips and now returns to GB to make his debut with a new yard. Had a couple of previous tries on this surface (placed third/fourth); interesting runner off this mark but may be better over 5f

Shallow Hal28
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-2| J: B A Curtis| T: K R Burke| OR:  80| D
2/1
Fibresand newcomer who went through last year without a win and on the whole his season was an underwhelming one even after a wind op. Still 4lb above his last winning mark although he is by a sire (Mayson) who has a good record on this surface.

Samovarb2
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-1| J: K T O'Neill| T: S Dixon| OR:  79| CD
5/1
Quirky sort who is capable of some decent form but often throws his chance away at the start. Five-time course winner and despite having won over this trip here is thought better at 5f; produced a typical performance over 5f last time.

Forecasts

Shallow Hal (2/1), Young John (11/4), Samovar (5/1), Katheefa (7/1), Aleef (8/1), Zylan (14/1), Eye Of The Water (25/1)

18:15 Southwell - 3 January 2020 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

Four C&D winners out of the septet that are scheduled to go to post with KATHEEFA looking to be the most interesting back on a surface where he’s won his last two races. He’s up 3lb but remains in 0-85 company and should once again make a bold bid. Aleef was below-par when last seen in Ireland but should pay his way for his new yard given he was very consistent for the most part in 2019. Of the other C&D winners Young John looks the pick and its not beyond the realms of possibility that Shallow Hal has more to offer this year having been disappointing throughout last year.
  1. Katheefa
  2. Aleef
  3. Young John
