Winner of three of his 14 chase starts, one of those coming at Wetherby last time out (20f) where he made almost all; 7lb rise and back up in trip here, and hasn't always followed up a good run with another.

Frustrating if talented handicap chaser, often finishing in the frame in valuable Cheltenham handicaps but finds getting his head in front hard; it'll fall right for him again one day but he may need this after a break.

Wouldn't be the biggest chaser around but stays very well and handles plenty of cut; well below par on reappearance at Ascot but could be fitter for that, and track should suit; not totally discounted.

Well handicapped on the best of his form for Gordon Elliott but had looked to be struggling for that yard and he was no better on first start for his new one, finishing last at Carlisle. May need more time acclimatising and best watched.

Stays well and won the North Yorkshire National at Catterick from a 4lb lower mark last year; probably needed his reappearance run at Kelso, as many from the yard have, handles most ground, and could take a hand for yard coming back to form.

Burtons Well27
Age: 10|  Weight: 11-5| J: Charlie Deutsch| T: Miss V Williams| OR:  138

Has always looked a useful, if somewhat fragile, sort, and trainer got him spot on after another long absence to score at Aintree on his reappearance last month. Good chance from 5lb higher as long as he doesn't "bounce" off that.

Twice a winner in the spring but handicapper took action after that, and he has found life a lot harder since; starting to slip back but best to wait for more positive signs that he's coming back to form before getting involved.

Improving chaser, winner of two of his last three with some bold-front running displays and he lost nothing in defeat at Kelso last time; trip and ground will both suit and although this is tougher, he could be up to the challenge.

Age: 8|  Weight: 11-2| J: Alan Johns| T: Tim Vaughan| OR:  135
8/1
Has always looked a chaser but threw in some scruffy leaps at Market Rasen last time, in the circumstances doing well to grab second and go as close as he did; cut the errors out and he could improve a bundle here, with trip likely to suit.

Back To The Thatch28
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-11| J: T J O'Brien| T: H D Daly| OR:  130
4/1
Stays all day, as he showed with his second in a 0-145 handicap here last December; probably needed his reappearance run to put him straight and with yard still among the winners, could easily get involved at a track he likes.

Forecasts

Burtons Well (7/2), Crievehill (4/1), Back To The Thatch (4/1), Singlefarmpayment (7/1), Theligny (8/1), Ami Desbois (9/1), Sharp Response (12/1), Amalfi Doug (14/1), Bob Mahler (20/1), Blow By Blow (50/1)

12:40 Haydock - 23 November 2019 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

An open handicap. THELIGNY did remarkably well to finish second at Market Rasen considering he threw in a few hairy leaps early on and he remains one with plenty of potential over fences, especially if he can find a bit more fluency here. Amalfi Doug simply keeps on running well and there seems no reason why he won't run his race again. He can take a prize home, along with Sharp Response, with the Sue Smith yard looking to turn things around after a slow start to the year. Burtons Well was impressive at Aintree but long absences between some of his starts tell you he's not entirely straightforward.
  1. Theligny
  2. Amalfi Doug
  3. Sharp Response
