Up 5lb for winning at the fifth attempt at Nottingham on what was his second start in handicap company. Two-and-a-half length in front of Ventura Bay the time before that (reopposes with that rival today). Top-weight but should run well again.

Made seasonal debut when fifth in a competitive race at Haydock (1m; good to firm). That was a much better heat than this contest and he should improve a fair bit from that too on this return to a Class 5.

Not improved since making the switch to handicaps. Mark has dropped 5lb since then. Headgear is added after he looked a tricky ride at Nottingham recently when hanging up the home straight. Not very appealing.

Hasn't progressed since making an encouraging debut back in March. Last seen when sixth behind Regular at Leicester (7f; good to firm). Makes handicap debut and should be competitive but has a bit to prove. Foolish to write off for top yard though.

Much improved effort compared to what she had shown in maidens when finishing runner-up on handicap debut nine days ago at Leicester (1m; good to firm). Raised 5lb for that but it would be a major disappointment were she not to kick on and progress.

0-11 and has been quite inconsistent in handicaps over the past year or so. Hard to fault two runs this campaign though and is a player if reproducing that level of form. Dropped another 1lb by the handicapper since last run.

Got her three-year-old campaign off to the perfect start when scoring at Redcar (1m; good to firm) on her second start in a handicap. Backwards step since but may not have enjoyed the AW at Wolverhampton (1m; standard). Could get back on track.

Done OK over sprint trips in novice stakes races at the beginning of the year. One would have hoped for more improvement when he stepped up to 1m and made his debut in handicaps. Still early days though and not one to lose complete faith in.

Latest effort was a slight improvement on what she showed when making her seasonal comeback at Thirsk. That was a sixth placed finish at Beverley (7f; good). Has been dropped 2lb by the handicapper but hard to be enthusiastic about.

Another runner in this contest for Tim Easterby. Has proved to be quite disappointing in his career so far and more was probably expected when he was switched to handicaps. Could improve as a three-year-old but needs to. Makes seasonal reappearance.

Forecasts

Cardano (9/4), Ventura Bay (9/2), Beguiling Charm (7/1), Golden Parade (15/2), Gylo (8/1), Anna Bunina (10/1), Rakastava (14/1), King Shamardal (14/1), Mecca's Gift (16/1), Cawthorne Lad (33/1)

19:00 Ripon - 5 June 2019 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

Recent winning form is something which is hard to find in this race, which makes the claims of Cardano all the more stronger. He has evidently improved a fair bit since being switched to handicaps and should have more to offer on just his third start in this code. Preference is for the filly BEGUILING CHARM though, who contested some hot maidens before posting a good effort when runner-up on handicap debut nine days ago. A 5lb rise for that looks fair, considering she drew 5L clear of the third. Ventura Bay has form which ties in with Cardano and should get closer to that rival receiving considerably more weight than when they faced each other at Haydock.
  1. Beguiling Charm
  2. Cardano
  3. Ventura Bay
