Off the mark at the third attempt when making all to take a 7f novice stakes at Yarmouth in August (beat The Last Emperor by 1L), but has been found out in nurseries since. Tough task penalised off joint top-weight.

30,000 gns yearling by Raven's Pass who looked a horse to keep on side when keeping on strongly to make a winning debut at Ayr in mid August (7f+ good). Another positive showing anticipated under a penalty.

Hasn't shown any obvious ability in three starts thus far (not beating all that many home), and is pitched in deep here upped in trip in the first time cheek-pieces.

Dwelt and always in the rear when finishing last of nine to Showmethedough on debut at Ripon late last month (6f soft). Much more needed over this longer trip.

€60,000 yearling by Power who was a major eye-catcher on the AW on debut when a running on 1½L second to Tansheet at Newcastle last month (1m, standard). Interesting.

A beaten favourite on all three starts thus far, which suggests that more is required in order to succeed at York. However, this extra yardage could have a positive effect and he seems a genuine sort.

A six race maiden (three time runner up), and looks much more exposed than some. Down the field in a valuable sales contest at Doncaster latest, but his Ripon effort from August looks stronger now with Austrian School a Pontefract winner on Monday.

Had three quick runs over the course of a month during August and September, and its a surprise to see him contesting this rather than a more suitable nursery. Little obvious chance.

16,000 gns Champs Elysees gelding who finished a tailed off last of 11 on debut at Carlisle last month (1m heavy). Couldn't be considered, but better ground a likely minor positive.

Stablemate of Eddiethebung, and realistically holds even less chance. Cut no ice in either start so far (5f and 7f), and a certain back number.

Finished last of 12 on debut at Thirsk in early September (7f soft); in a race where Qianlong was a ¾L runner up to Air Raid. Returns wearing blinkers, but plenty to do obviously.

Ploughed on from the rear to finish a never nearer 2¼L second to Ayutthaya in the mud at Chester on debut recently (7f heavy). Capable of building upon that effort, but that looks tricky form to evaluate.

Had five attempts to break the duck and basically hasn't proved anywhere near good enough, including in nursery company the past twice. Stays, and no trouble with conditions, but probably hasn't the ability to get involved.

Not knocked about after a slow start on debut at Thirsk in early September when finishing sixth of 13 to Poets Dream (Barefoot Baby runner up); 7f soft. Improvement possible, but this looks tougher.

Finished third on debut at Beverley last month, and the likes of Vera Drake (second) and Firby (fifth) didn't really advertise that form at Newcastle on Tuesday. A beaten favourite at Pontefract latest, so more to prove.

Like the runner up Zatorius was too green to do herself justice at Chester last month (fifth), but that was her second start, so no reason to expect her to reverse those placings despite the better ground forecast today.

Forecasts

Zatorius (9/4), Qianlong (4/1), Photonics (6/1), Barford (7/1), Salazar (7/1), Cosa Nostra (8/1), Barefoot Baby (20/1), Hyanna (33/1), Aphaea (33/1), So Near So Farhh (33/1), Contrebasse (50/1), Prince Consort (66/1), Caviar Royale (66/1), Power Sail (80/1), Joe Cable (100/1), Eddiethebung (100/1)

Zatorius is certain to be popular with punters after making late progress through the Chester mud on debut last month. This slightly longer trip should play to his strengths and with that experience taken on board is much respected. However, the actual worth of that form is difficult to assess and others hold similar claims. Qianlong looks reliable for Roger Varian, but equally beatable, and in truth the Ayr winner Salazar makes more appeal despite having the burden of a penalty. Therefore, a really strong preference is for the Hugo Palmer trained PHOTONICS. This €60,000 Power colt was a massive eye-catcher behind a reasonably talented and more experienced rival (Tansheet) on debut at Newcastle last month, and it is perhaps telling how much connections must think about this horse, that Newcastle based owner John Dance elects to send his charge here to York in preference to a return to Gosforth Park, where an easier winning opportunity will surely present itself in the weeks which lie ahead.
