Positive tactics and a resolute attitude have been rewarded with three wins this term. It is a couple of years since he was competitive from this kind of mark and others look better handicapped, but he has to be on the shortlist.

All four career wins have been gained in this grade but have come on AW tracks. Latest run at Musselburgh underlines the fact and her turf mark probably has further to fall.

Maiden who showed ability for David O'Meara in 2015 off higher marks. Had a spin at Gowran Park three weeks ago which followed an absence of nearly two years. Experienced rider has partnered 60 winners under NH rules. Trainer does not send many over here but has had one winner and three placed from just six raiders. One to note in the market with the fitting of cheekpieces adding to the intrigue.

Best form has come under more positive rides than he has been getting lately. Almost two years since his last win and a year since he last made the first three. Inexperienced rider on board and he probably carries too many risks.

Not won since his purple patch in 2014 when he won four handicaps the last off a mark of 58. Two improved efforts in defeat around here over the past month have seen him break through that level and that leaves him with work to do.

Off the mark at the first attempt for this yard under today's rider at Carlisle. Ground turned against him last time and that sees him drop to a mark just 1lb higher than that latest victory.

Looks interesting in this on handicap debut having indicated he was one to note in this sphere. Rider is 5-21 on the Flat and 3-3 around here.

Has looked more capable on AW surfaces but produced one of his better runs for this yard on good-to-soft ground at Redcar last time under this rider. That suggests he is finding his level and the forecast quicker ground ought to be a benefit. Looks interesting.

Gets a 12lb pull with Haymarket on running at Hamilton last month and with less than 2L to find. However, he has been well below that standard since and cheekpieces go on.

Infrequent winner who has been poor lately including a tame effort in a seller last time. On the plus side her last two wins have come off this mark and rider has a career record of 4-21.

25-race maiden who made the frame for the first time at Newcastle in June and has done so again on two occasions since. Not so good last time and higher mark makes her less appealing.

Landed his first race in over two years under this rider when picking up a poor Ayr apprentice race a month ago. Comfortably held on three starts since, which came in the space of a week, and it would be a surprise if he proved good enough to land this. Engaged Musselburgh 3:00 Friday.

Sole win came in early 2015 and there was little evidence on his return on Monday to suggest he was ready to add a second victory soon.

Did manage to win here (dead-heat) over 2f further in 2015 but has only run three times since starting 33/1 each time and failing to beat a rival home.

Rebel State (5/1), Remember Rocky (11/2), Looking Good (6/1), Haymarket (6/1), Argaki (8/1), Jessie Allan (9/1), Let Right Be Done (10/1), Dark Confidant (10/1), Stardrifter (16/1), Schottische (20/1), Fire Diamond (22/1), Danny Mc D (28/1), Yair Hill (40/1), Wolf Heart (66/1)

17:50 Ayr - 12 August 2017 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

Haymarket arrives on the top of his game but his new mark asks serious questions and there are few dark horses in this who are worth a closer look. Danny Mc D makes his handicap debut with a good rider on board and the Irish challenger Looking Good has an experienced rider on board and may have been mapped out for this. Rebel State looks sure to be thereabouts but we think DARK CONFIDANT can follow up his recent success under this rider off just 1lb higher. The soft ground was against him last time but the quicker surface here can bring the McCain family another win in an amateur's race to add to their haul in 2017.
  1. Dark Confidant
  2. Rebel State
  3. Haymarket
