Multiple winner at Ayr but has gone well here in the past; even though he is yet to get his head in front after four previous visits to North Yorkshire. Has won from a 7lb higher mark but needs to bounce back after a below par effort latest.

Snippets of form give him a good chance and yard always respected at its local course. Debatable as to whether he is as effective over a mile as he is over 7f though. Needs everything to go his way,

Likes Thirsk - won this race last year and sound claims on the best of his efforts for his former yard. Now 6lb higher than last year and two starts this season below his best. Others preferred.

Won three from seven so far and is proving to be a tough customer. Made good progress and coped with 6lb rise admirably at York last month. Just 2lb higher today, he has a live chance on a literal reading of his latest win and is a threat to them all.

Now trained in Ireland, his best efforts have come over 7f in but he stays a mile well and is entitled to plenty of respect. First-time blinkers may sharpen him up and one to bear in mind if the market indicates he has travelled over well.

Yard won this four years ago with a similar type and portents look good after this fellow posted a solid effort in the Carlisle Bell - now 2lb better off with Carnageo, so feasible chance of reversing the form. Interesting if supported.

Goes well at this track and in good heart just now. Second to Two For Two at Ayr last month reads well and not without a chance from just a 1lb higher mark.

Enjoy a good season so far but is now 7lb higher than for his win in the Carlisle Bell consolation race. More now required and looks weighted to the limit.

Best effort to date when winning the Carlisle Bell last time out and given a chance of following up from just 4lb higher. Ground should suit but personal best now required.

Won over 1m at Redcar last winter but struggled to back it up from his revised mark. Now getting some leniency after a handful of defeats but latest efforts suggest the assessor still has his measure.

All his best form has been achieved over 7f so far. Wasn't disgraced when upped to a mile for the first time in a tough handicap at Doncaster last month. Coped well but more to do in this stronger looking race.

Claims on the pick of his efforts but is now seemingly at the pinnacle of his ability and will need to dig deeper than he ever has before. Risky for win only purposes.

Transformed since the application of headgear and has won two of his last three starts. This a lot tougher than the race he won at Beverley earlier in the week but worth a shot whilst he's in obvious good heart. Booking of a 7lb helps off-set the 6lb penalty but a big effort is still required.

Started this season off in good form but lacks scope from his present mark and needs to be at his very best. Yard highly respected but still a tough task ahead on these terms.

Third behind Ginger Jack in this last year and comes here on the back of a sound if unspectacular effort last time. More to do and also has a bit to find with the likes of Carnageo; should run his race but likely a few of the others will take his measure.

Won over C&D from a 5lb lower mark last summer and another this is likely to find this company hot to handle when push comes to shove.

16:00 Thirsk - 5 August 2017 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

The progressive CHIEFOFCHIEFS is far less exposed than many of his main rivals and looks worth keeping the right side for the time being. Carnageo and King's Pavilion are closely matched and are both respected as dangers. Two For Two has a stiff test from the head of the weights but is suggested as the best of the rest. Severus is another with place claims if adapting to the first-time cheekpieces over a trip that stretches him to the limit.
