Very much given a chance by the handicapper when scoring on his first run of the year at Wolverhampton after a five months break. Has looked in good heart in a couple of races after that and showed he could cope with this sort of mark. Form back on the AW suffered a dip last time down in trip to an extended mile and he didn't lead as usual and now returns from another absence.

Form has a rather inconsistent feel about it and not a frequent winner although he did score here over C&D in May 2016 (his last win) off a mark of 83 with the race being run to suit. Overall he's struggled since then and shown very little in two runs this year although he is down to his last winning mark.

Took a couple of handicaps last year over C&D in June (in a hood off 76) and produced his best performance of the year when signing off for the season with a victory at Newmarket over a mile off a 2lb higher mark without the headgear. Looks to be bubbling under a little bit this year with his reappearance run at Doncaster (came third) probably his best off a mark of 85. Ground (soft) may not have suited him last time here over 1m1f so not totally written off here.

Two wins last year both on the AW over a mile almost bookended the year and although after that he shaped as if he had more wins in him off higher marks he did find winning difficult with the handicapper unwilling to drop him. Back from a break here and dropped a couple of pounds he might be able to get in the mix but so far his turf form has looked below-par.

Ended last season with a brace of wins at Musselburgh and Beverley and once again showed his love for the Scottish track when winning there in May after a reappearance that had suggested better to come. Given an eight week break after that win he shaped as though he was still in good form when looking as though he was lacking a recent run at Carlisle off a 5lb higher mark of 78. Travels well and although this is tough off this mark he can't be discounted in this contest.

Started the season in good form with a win on the AW over 7f at Newcastle in a race that panned out well for him (held-up off a decent pace after being slow away). The majority of his runs since have shown him in a good light (cheekpieces on for the last three) and it was a rare poor run last time out at Redcar (never travelling at all). Granted a decent pace he could bounce back off a decent mark here.

Lightly raced three-year-old who scored at Thirsk (7f, heavy) as a juvenile but hasn't so far fired in a couple of outings this year and as yet has yet to beat a horse home. Mark drops now into the 70's for the first time and the cheekpieces are retained and he also steps back in trip but plenty to prove on the whole.

Finally off the mark after some consistent if unconvincing placed efforts before that including one over C&D on his penultimate start. Upped in trip to 1m1f and returned here last time out he won a maiden in comfortable style making all and travelling strongly. That didn't look a bad maiden (beat the favourite Liquid Gold) and the fifth won next time out although his mark isn't a particularly lenient one.

Like most if not all of the handicaps there are plenty of options to take a look at in this one over a mile. Lamloom will be popular with quite a few on his handicap debut although the mark doesn’t look that generous and he faces some decent rivals here like Timeless Art although that one won’t want any further rain and the same could be said of Testa Rossa who was a non-runner on Sunday due to the ground. Both Count Montecristo and Le Chat D’Or will have their supporters the latter in particular if there is any further rain. CHAPLIN BAY has been in good form all year though and can be forgiven one poor run last timeout and he’s given the vote to bounce back here in a race that should be run to suit.
