On the figures he's every chance here, but whether a step up in trip is what he requires at present is open to debate, as both the visual impression and breeding suggests shorter may be best. That aside, his second in the Criterium at Saint-Cloud is the best form on offer, and he can't be dismissed purely on trip alone.

Made a good impression as a 2-y-o and looked ready for a crack at middle distances when a staying on third to Cunco at Sandown in their Classic Trial in April. Seems to act on all ground, and should run his race again, although may find something improving past him.

Came good with last-gasp wins at both Ascot and Newmarket last season, and started this one off with a never-nearer fifth at Newmarket (9f). Can race a bit freely and breeding suggests this could be a bit far for him. Plenty to prove here, and although clearly useful, others preferred.

Showed a good attitude to rally and claim the prize back at Doncaster on his final start of last year, and did far better than finishing position suggests at Sandown last time as he blew the start and lost all chance before staying on late. Looks to be crying out for middle distances and chances if all goes well today.

Bred to be well suited by middle distances and created a good impression when an easy winner of a Gowran Park maiden in October (soft/heavy). Faces different ground conditions here but powerful connections have won this twice in the last four years and know what's required.

Had a good season as a 2-y-o but was always going to do better this season, and absolutely thrashed his rivals on his latest start at Leicester, powering away for a 10l victory. Likely to try and make all the running again and given he looks a galloping type, can't be allowed too much rope.

The market wasn't expecting much on his debut at Nottingham last October but he shocked everyone by getting up late to win at 25/1, showing a nice turn of foot late on. Turned in a perfectly solid first effort of the season when fourth to Cracksman at Epsom , and should have come on from that. Not discounted.

Did it nicely on debut at Leicester, finding plenty for pressure and coming through late in the day to win going away (1m). Bred to do better for a step up in trip and although this is a big jump in class, connections wouldn't be running him here without thinking he could cope with it.

Forecasts

Sir John Lavery (11/8), Tartini (5/1), Best Solution (7/1), Sofia's Rock (7/1), Zamfir (7/1), Frankuus (14/1), Glencadam Glory (16/1), Apex King (25/1)

14:30 Lingfield - 13 May 2017 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

Frankuus and Best Solution have the form in the book, but both are susceptible to those improving quickly at this stage and SIR JOHN LAVERY may prove the answer. He was most impressive on debut and given the yard have taken this twice in recent times, he can be expected to be wpund up enough for his first run of the season. Sofia's Rock could be the one to catch after an easy win at Leicester and although this is tougher, he looks to be heading the right way. Tartini and Glencadam Glory are two very interesting John Gosden runners in what should be an informative contest.
  1. Sir John Lavery
  2. Tartini
  3. Sofia's Rock
