25/1
Grand old veteran who has been running as well as ever in the past 12 months, scoring over 2m4f at Hexham (soft) in March off a mark of 115 and has continued to give his running both over hurdles and fences since. Sees out this trip well and a slight drop in the weights won't do him any harm, so despite being long in the tooth he is entitled to go very well.

Very versatile where the ground is concerned and previously good enough to win a Kelso handicap hurdle from a mark of 132, although his last success came at Carlisle from 17 in October. Stable going great guns and he would not be winning out of turn, though looks to be weighted to the ceiling of his current ability at present.

Relishes testing ground and stays 3m, although he has never won beyond Kelso's extended 2m6f. Races from 1lb below that December 2015 success today and retains that sort of ability judged on recent efforts, so can't be ruled out.

Landed a soft ground novices' handicap chase here in March from a mark of 109 and has run some very good races in defeat over both fences an hurdles since. Sees out 3m, though arguably his optimum trip would be the shorter one, but has his best chance for some time at these weights.

Ended 2015 in rare form, winning three out of four races at around today's trip at one stage, climbing to a mark of 121 as a result. That proved to be too hot to handle and a slump in form has followed. Very well handicapped now as a result, though would have liked to have seen some signs of a return to form before getting involved. Nonetheless, do check the market in case there are any clues from that sphere.

Raised 5lb for a resounding nine-length success (heavy) over 3m2f at Kelso last time, meaning that the handicapper is now asking this veteran to produce his best winning effort for almost three years today. CV shows that he has never won two races back-to-back and the percentage call at his age is to take him on this time.

Should be clearer pointers to his chance here from the running of McGinty's Dream earlier on the card, as he finished behind that runner at Newcastle last time in a race that has thus far worked out well. Yet to race on the forecast heavy ground, but handles soft well enough and on just her second start in a handicap there looks likely to be improvement to come.

Forecasts

Plus Jamais (9/4), Another Mattie (3/1), Oscar's Prospect (4/1), Bourne (4/1), Bescot Springs (11/1), See Double You (25/1), Native Optimist (40/1)

15:20 Ayr - 14 February 2017 - Racecard - Horse Racing - Sporting Life

An interesting little contest, with Oscar's Prospect a potential improver who could take a close hand, with See Double You likely to give his running and Bescot Springs arriving on the back of a wide-margin win. They could all be in the shake-up, though preference is for PLUS JAMAIS, who has his best chance for some time courtesy of a slight drop in the weights. 1. Plus Jamais 2. Oscar's Prospect 3. See Double You
