2.20 Ascot
I’m usually happy to forgive a poor effort where an excuse is forthcoming, or where that run is simply out of line with a consistent record, and that’s the case for RACINGBREAKS RYDER, who flopped in a Class 2 at Kempton last time, but can have a line struck through that effort at a track where he has a poor overall record (unplaced on four of five starts there).
He’s back down to a more suitable level here and the handicapper has helped in that regard, with a drop for Kempton making him eligible for this 0-80 event.
Racingbreaks Ryder will also be happier back on turf with some ease in it, and I’m hoping the heavy rain predicted at Ascot all arrives, with the selection having a record of 211721423 on soft/heavy ground at 7f/1m below Class 2 level, including a C&D success.
Racingbreaks Ryder will be ridden by trainer Charlie Hills’ son James, a youngster in the amateur ranks, but at 6ft3”, unlikely to stay long in the riding ranks. Despite that, he’s impressed with his composure in the saddle in his short career to date, and I’m confident that he will be able to get a tune out of his mount, who must have an excellent chance from a reduced mark of 81 having twice been placed this summer in better handicaps off 3lb higher, both of those efforts coming on ground with significant cut.
4.40 Ascot
BROSAY is finally starting to fulfil his potential as a sprint handicapper and after some bad luck earlier in the year, has got it together with ready wins at Windsor and here at Ascot on his last two starts, winning with a bit in hand last time.
That form has worked really well, with fourth and second home Candy and Jubilee walk winning and finishing third in the Ayr Gold Cup last week, and a 6lb rise does not look enough to stop Paul Attwater’s progressive handicapper winning again.
Bob Mali looked a picture in the paddock at Doncaster last time and the Trackside team made him one of their paddock picks for the race. He looked like justifying that faith when trading odds-on in the race, only to find Charlie Mason a neck too good form him. Nevertheless, that signified a return to form and Charles Hills is starting the latter stages of the season off strongly, with four winners in the last eight days. He looks the danger to the selection.
6.45 Southwell
BIN AJWAD took to the track like a duck to water when successful on his handicap debut here at the beginning of last month, in a solid time figure too, and the form looks more than believable; the second ran to a similar level when placed at Kempton and the third looked progressive at a low level, having won his last two starts.
The handicapper asks for a bit more from a 6lb higher mark, but there’s no reason to think we’ve reached anything like his ceiling, and he should be up to the task.
7.45 Southwell
A desperately weak event - I can’t recall a time when a 0-55 here had the top weight off a mark of just 50, these races are normally the ones that overfill and get split - and it looks a very good opportunity for DESERT MASTER, twice a winner here, after bouncing back to form at Newcastle last time out.
The application of blinkers seemed to wake his ideas up there and he ran his best race for some time, beaten just a length, and merely a repeat of that should be good enough here. The Antony Brittain team have found a bit of form too, with five of his last eight only beaten a length or less, and a winner or two feels like it is just around the corner for the yard.
