Southampton v Liverpool

  • St Mary's Stadium, 2000 BST kick-off on Sky Sports Premier League

Betting guide

With Saints now playing with a style similar to the one which Liverpool played in Klopp's first couple of seasons on Merseyside this could be quite the entertainer. The hosts have picked up good results on home turf against top sides and it would be no surprise to see Liverpool drop points here. Hasenhuttl has proved to be tactically astute with well organised displays from Southampton under his tutelage and there could be fine margins in this one, with the visitors possibly frustrated and missing an opportunity to get points on the board ahead of their rivals.

Best bet:
An odds-on shot but a good way to start the weekend. Southampton are flying and there is value to be had in them getting something from this game. They have found the back of the net in 11 of their last 12 in all competitions and, whatever the result, they are expected to enhance that run further.

Goals/Stats:
The shots market has some very attractive prices, both in general and on target. One that stands out is the price on James Ward-Prowse to have two shots at an attractive 11/8, which does not require them to be on target. The England international has taken his game to the next level under Hasenhuttl, scoring six goals and earning a call-up from Gareth Southgate. His stats show he does not shy away when they come up against big-name opponents. He has registered at least two shots in three of his last five games and has had two or more efforts against Spurs (twice), Fulham, Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea this term. Four of his goals have come on home turf, two in his last two appearances there, and his attacking role supporting the front two on the night means he will be key to Southampton if they are to get anything out of this game.
